WE ARE BORN OF LIGHT
We are born of Light
and the knowledge without wisdom
given in State education is
to reduce that Light
until it leaves a
darkness within.
For darkness is easier
to control than Light
because Light bounces
off things, makes water into
diamonds that dance on
the surface, coruscations
of lux - evasive to the hand
but not to the eye.
We are born of Light
and it is the parents of
the child who replace the
tempera obscura of the
school day. For Light
breaks through, always;
in Art, Music, Poetry,
Sculpture, Film, Dance…
Need I go on?
Need I say more?
Perhaps…
and so…
We are all born of Light
don’t try to cover the
cracks of the State’s reality,
this is where the Light bleeds
in for it has no intimacy
nor ultimacy.
To quote Angelus:
“The wise have one wish
left; to know the Whole,
the Absolute.
The foolish lose themselves
in frag-ments
and ignore
the Root.”
Such is school life, centred
on the fragments and unable
to see the Whole, to talk
of it - to teach it - to
embrace it. As I embrace
my son,
I know I hold in my arms
Light - and
I burn more brightly for it.
