TWO LONERS TAKE ON THE SYSTEM
Friendship is a theme within the 0w1 novels, but friends are sometimes difficult to find, if you lose your family, your social group or community. There is, however, always hope.
meet strix and calvin
Two loners, Strix and Calvin meet each other in their last year at a Bristol school. Strix has just been transferred from the Greenfields Orphanage, where he’s been since the death of his mother; the day before his 7th Birthday.
Calvin struggled through school and didn’t socialise with any of the social groups. He had no desire to be one of the crowd, where the herd mentality predominates. Hey, he was his own man and not one to follow peer pressure.
Strix had a few friends at the Orphanage, but with its doctrinaire teaching methods and strict disciplinary code, it was no place to feel at home, or flourish educationally. His saving grace was the Griffin family and his friendship with Freddie. They belonged to an underground reading group, called as such because they met in a basement Boiler Room and read dystopian authors like Orwell and Bradbury.
Calvin feels that Strix has had an exciting life, compared to his humdrum affair. He suffers with his bland parents, who have no commitments other than to self-preservation. He knows however, that as much as Strix’s life was more exciting than his, that the loss of his mother, after his father’s incarceration in a Political Correction Facility, must have been traumatic.
But Cal’s parents have no room for love, only function matters to them, roles to play as a married couple and in their State provided jobs. He hasn’t known any real affection and admits to Strix that he is a little envious of having parents who actually stood up for something, even if the costs were grave. His life with them was so full of passion, for art, politics, fashion, music, along with a healthy disdain for theology and State sponsored writers.
They also had a small community of people who supported each other. All Cal had experienced was a couple of parents who seemed to resent his presence and were longing for the day when he would leave their home (aged 16) and find his own way in life. As if, he thought, they had anything to do with his upbringing, beyond the obvious day-to-day management of meals, there was no input or interest in his education and they certainly wouldn’t understand his craving to be an artist.
The bond between them grows; Strix wants to write about his life and the society he lives in and so decides to start a journal. Calvin’s hidden talents as an artist are encouraged by Strix, but Cal’s penchant for street art leaves him with few, if any, places to paint his work. He continues to work on a portfolio of templates and awaits the day when he can bring the city centre alive with his work and stir a little controversy.
Theirs is a friendship that will help change the world.
WE WILL SEE THE BOND BETWEEN STRIX AND CALVIN STRENGTHEN DURING DIFFICULT TIMES.
